The World Tossit League
TOSSIT started in a backyard, not a boardroom. But there are now enough of us throwing darts in enough living rooms, kitchens and parking lots that it may as well be a league — so we wrote it down and made it official.
Free to join. No club, no dues, no season. Just the rules, the players, and bragging rights.
How It Works
- Learn the official rulesSame game you already play. The rulebook below just settles every argument before it starts.
- Put your name downRegister below. It's free, and it's how we know where players actually are.

The Official Rulebook
Eight sections, and the whole thing fits in your head. Tap any one to open it.
-
1. Equipment
League play uses a standard TOSSIT set, exactly as it comes out of the bag. No weighting, trimming, sanding or otherwise modifying a dart.
Per match
- Each player throws 3 darts, all the same colour.
- The two players must use different colours — no arguing over whose is whose.
- One black "jack" dart is shared between both players.
Condition
Suction cups must be clean and dry. Wiping a cup between throws is allowed and encouraged — a dusty cup is a missed shot, not a rules problem.
-
2. The Court
Casual TOSSIT says stand roughly 7–10 feet back. League play fixes it, so nobody wins by quietly creeping forward.
The surface
Any smooth, flat, vertical or horizontal surface both players agree on before the match starts — a wall, a fridge, a table, a garage door. Once the match begins, the surface does not change.
The throw line
- Mark a line 7 feet from the playing surface.
- Both players throw from the same line.
- Tape, a shoe, a crack in the driveway — anything works, as long as it doesn't move.
-
3. Starting A Match
Coin flip or one round of rock, paper, scissors. The winner picks one of the following:
- Throw the black jack dart to open the match, or
- Hand that job to their opponent and pick which side of the line they stand on.
Landing the jack
The jack has to stick before the round can start. If it doesn't land, the other player throws it. Keep alternating until it sticks — on a difficult surface this can take a few tries, and that's normal.
Whoever lands the jack throws the first coloured dart of that round.
-
4. Order Of Play
Turns
Players alternate throws until both are out of darts. A dart that doesn't stick is gone — no re-throws, ever.
The line
Both feet stay behind the throw line until the dart has left your hand. You may step forward afterwards to look at the lie, and you may step out to inspect placement between throws.
The clock
15 seconds per throw. Long enough to actually aim, short enough that nobody is lining up the perfect shot for two minutes. Run it out and you forfeit that dart.
-
5. Scoring
League play uses the same cancellation scoring as the regular game — like cornhole. One player takes the whole round; the other takes nothing.
Winning a round
Once every dart has been thrown, whoever's dart is closest to the black jack dart wins the round.
Points
- The round winner scores +1 for every dart they landed.
- The other player scores 0, however well they threw.
This is why matches swing so late — a whole round can flip on the last dart.
Winning the match
First player to 13 points wins. Clear the surface, the previous round's winner throws the jack, and go again.
-
6. Bonus Moves
Every special move from the standard game counts in league play, unchanged — the Kiss, the French Kiss, the Jackiss, the Jumpover, the Jackover, the Jackquake, the Jackoff and the Jack-0.
The full breakdown of each one, with pictures and point values, lives on the Game Rules page.
The one league addition
Call it out loud the moment it happens — "that's a Kiss," "that's touching" — before the next dart is thrown. Once the next dart is in the air, the moment has passed and it doesn't get relitigated after the round.
As always, a bonus only counts if you won the round, and the dart has to stay put for 3 seconds.
-
7. Fouls & Disputes
Foot fault
Cross the line before the dart leaves your hand and that dart is dead. Remove it — it scores nothing and blocks nothing.
Shot clock
Run out the 15 seconds and you forfeit that dart.
Too close to call
If two darts are genuinely level and neither player will concede, both players throw one more dart each, in the original order. Everything already on the surface stays exactly where it is. Closest of the two rethrows takes the round.
Knocked loose
A dart that falls on its own after landing is judged where it was, if both players agree on where that was. If they don't, it's out.
-
8. Conduct
Don't distract someone mid-throw. Don't move the jack. Don't argue for four minutes about a dart nobody can measure — throw again and get on with it.
Everything above exists so that a game between two people who've never met is played the same way. It is not there to take the fun out of it. If you and your opponent both want to move the line, change the surface or play to 21 instead, that's your match — just agree before you start, not after you're losing.
